The Nile University Model United Nations (NUMUN) student club organized its first symposium on May 2, 2019. The event, themed “Building a Culture of Model United Nations,” was aimed at educating students on the Model United Nations as well as its importance. Notable individuals present at the event included Mr. Chika Nwaozuzu (Chairman of the Nigeria Model United Nations Society), Mr. M.I Abdulbakai (Executive Director of the Abuja International Model United Nations), Dr. Sheriff Ghali (Senior Lecturer at the University of Abuja and Staff Advisor for the Abuja International Model United Nations) and Mr. M.J. Bamalli (Ag. Director of Student Affairs at Nile University of Nigeria), to name a few. Giving the event’s keynote address was Mr. Chika Nwaozuzu who explained the Model UN to the audience; according to him, the Model UN is an educational simulation in which students role-play delegates to the UN. During these exercises, students are assigned countries to represent; they are then expected to discuss the topic of that particular event from the perspective of their respective nations. Following Mr. Nwaozuzu’s speech was an address by Mr. M.I Abdulbakai, who explained the benefits of the Model UN for its participants, including educating them on important and current global issues, improving their teamwork and leadership skills, etc.

Subsequently, a question and answer session, during which the speakers fielded the questions of the audience, took place, as well as a simulation exercise in which the students were randomly assigned a faculty from Nile University and asked to discuss the topic, “how to subsidize the cost of living on campus,” from the perspectives of their given faculties. The event concluded with a closing speech/remark by the club advisor, Ms. Aisha Bala Yabani.
