We, the coaches of the Nile University basketball team, on behalf of the Student Affairs department, extend a very hearty thanks to the Management of Nile University of Nigeria for their wonderful support throughout our participation in the recently concluded National Basketball Federation Abuja City Basketball League.

This year’s edition (the 6th) of the competition spanned over five months and featured 16 nationally recognized basketball teams as well as over 500 professional basketball players. The tournament, which is Nigeria’s only marathon league, is divided into three highly competitive rounds—the 1st and 2nd rounds serve as the qualifying rounds for the 3rd round, which features only the best eight (8) teams in the competition.

The Nile University basketball team, making its debut appearance in the competition, reached the quarter-final stage (where it bowed out) after winning 10 of its 15 highly competitive matches in the first and second rounds. This feat was impressive for two reasons. For starters, in addition to being the first ever University to have participated in this tournament, the Nile University team was also the first one to qualify for the Best 8 round in its maiden appearance at the competition. Secondly, the Nile team was the youngest and most inexperienced group at the tournament by a distance. The team, which is barely 18 months old, consists solely of teenagers who were hand-picked and trained to represent Nile University in the upcoming University Games as well as other national and, potentially, international tournaments.

However, while the young players must be commended for their hard work and exemplary fighting spirit throughout the competition, the Management of Nile University deserves even greater credit for the team’s success. Without their provision of the necessary resources (financial, human, and otherwise) that facilitated the registration and approval of the team for the tournament, none of these achievements would have been possible. Today, thanks to them, at the mention of Nile University of Nigeria, over 500 professional basketball players nationwide have many positive things to say.

So, again, a very big ‘Thank You’ to the Management of Nile University of Nigeria for their immense support and commitment to basketball. We will continue to work hard to make our great University even prouder in future competitions.
